St Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes informed that the Panaji-Merces service road will be thrown open to traffic from September 1.

Speaking to reporters at the site, Fernandes said the culvert is nearing completion and once completed, the road will be thrown open to traffic thereby alleviating the troubles of those who had to either go all the way to Santa Cruz or the GMC bus stop for their onwards journey.

It may be recalled that at the recent Merces gram sabha, locals had highlighted the issue of trouble to residents, particularly students and office-goers, as the Kadamba buses were not plying from the service road.

Speaking further, Fernandes stated that he had directed the contractor to undertake the work on both the culverts simultaneously.

“But the work on the second culvert got delayed as the location got finalised late,” Fernandes added.

The MLA further stated that the culverts are constructed to ensure smooth flow of water, which was not happening.

“There were many culverts all along the Panaji-Merces stretch but today only a few are functional due to which the flow of water got affected and impacted the growth of the mangroves,” Fernandes said.

Speaking to reporters, Fernandes said the total cost of the project is over Rs 11 lakh and not Rs 17 lakh, as informed at the gram sabha.

“And the project not only includes laying of pavers, as is being portrayed, but construction of the culvert as well,” Fernandes added.

He clarified that the cost of pavers is only Rs 1.9 lakh, while the rest is for construction of the culvert and full grouting of the road.
