Panaji’s garbage ‘black spots’ to come under CCTV surveillance

PANAJI
Nearly a dozen garbage black spots in the capital city identified by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) will soon be monitored round the clock by installing closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

The decision had been taken a few months ago and the whole process of installing the cameras will be completed in a month’s time, according to CCP deputy mayor Sanjiv Naik.

Naik said, CCP officials are working on the project and the knowledge that the area is being monitored on cameras will act as a deterrent for people to dump waste and garbage at these spots.

The black spots identified by the CCP are in Altinho, Mala-Bhatlem, St Inez and Miramar, an official said.

The solid waste management team of the CCP has been managing efficient systems to handle the dry waste generated in the city. Most of the wet waste generated daily is transported for treatment to the centralised garbage plant at Saligao.

Yet, the large number of visitors to the city, especially tourists, are suspected to be responsible for creating these black spots where garbage gets piled up. To tackle this problem, CCTV cameras are being installed to monitor these areas which the capital city’s civic body believes will help.
