Parents of Std III students have submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Director of Education (ADEI) in Canacona, expressing concern over the difficulty level of question papers given in the recent examinations.
They said the papers did not match the students’ learning level and demanded that future question papers be prepared in consultation with primary school headmasters and teachers.
“We welcome the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in Goa, but students should be given time to adapt and build their skills before facing such new formats,” the parents stated in the memorandum.
They pointed out that some of the question papers, especially in Mathematics, were too difficult and confusing for Std III students. “The Maths paper seemed like an EVS or Marathi paper, and the language used was beyond the children’s understanding,” they added.
The memorandum also mentioned that there was a big gap between the model papers provided by the education department and the actual exam papers, which led to confusion among teachers and parents. “Teachers had completed the syllabus based on the model papers, but the actual exam paper was entirely different, causing stress and shock to the students,” it stated.
Parents further said the issue was not limited to Canacona but was being faced by students across Goa. They urged the education department and the SCERT to review the matter and ensure fair question papers for young students. “We request that the team setting the papers considers the students’ age and understanding level. Papers should be set in consultation with primary school headmasters and teachers so that students are given a fair chance to understand the NEP,” the parents said.
Copies of the memorandum have been sent to the Directorate of Education, the SCERT, and the Chief Minister, who also holds the Education portfolio.
