In a surprising turn of events, Chandanand Harmalkar, commonly known as Chandu, has stepped down as the Sarpanch of Parra, paving the way for a new leader to take charge.
Harmalkar resigned two days ago, citing an internal agreement among the panchayat members as the reason for his decision.
“I resigned as per a verbal understanding when I was entrusted with a two-year term. There was no external pressure; this was a planned decision to allow a new person to lead,” Harmalkar clarified.
He added that the panchayat members are yet to finalise the next sarpanch.
“All seven members are united, and we will decide together on the new leader,” Harmalkar said.
Amid the resignation, discussions within the village suggest that Deputy Sarpanch Daniel Lobo, son of prominent MLA couple Michael Lobo and Delilah Lobo, is the frontrunner for the position.
Sources indicate that Calangute MLA Michael Lobo may be grooming his son for a larger political role in the State.
Becoming the sarpanch of Parra is seen as a stepping stone to place Daniel Lobo in the political spotlight ahead of future assembly elections.
Michael Lobo is reportedly keen on providing his son with hands-on exposure to governance and leadership through the role of sarpanch.
Many believe this move is part of a larger strategy to prepare Daniel for a bid in State politics.
While the village awaits an official announcement, the buzz around Daniel Lobo’s potential elevation has sparked considerable interest, with many viewing this as a calculated move to ensure political continuity in the Lobo family.
