In a move that could trigger fresh political debate, former Public Works Department (PWD) Principal Chief Engineer Uttam Parsekar is set to make a comeback “ this time as advisor to PWD Minister Digambar Kamat.
Highly placed sources confirmed that a proposal to appoint Parsekar as advisor has already been moved.
However, the file is currently pending approval with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and has remained undecided for some time.
The development assumes significance as Parsekar was denied a fourth extension as PCE after his term ended on January 30, following legal challenges in the High Court against what petitioners described as arbitrary extensions beyond superannuation.
Amid the court scrutiny, the government appointed Sandip Chodnekar as the new Principal Chief Engineer.
Now, even before the dust has settled over the extension row, efforts appear to be underway to bring Parsekar back into the department through an advisory role.
Sources said Parsekar continues to be viewed as a key figure in the functioning of the PWD, particularly given his familiarity with major infrastructure projects and internal administrative processes.
With this being an election year, the department is under pressure to fast-track works and clear pending files “ a factor insiders say is driving the move.
“His experience is considered critical for pushing major works and ensuring continuity,” a senior official indicated, though no formal announcement has been made.
While the advisory post would not carry the statutory powers of the Principal Chief Engineer, it would enable Parsekar to remain closely involved in decision-making at the ministerial level “ a development that could raise questions in light of the earlier court challenge over his tenure extensions.
