PORVORIM
Political parties have stayed away from fielding panels for elections to three panchayats in Porvorim constituency, leaving only Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte to float a panel as campaigning came to an end on Monday.
Campaigning intensified during the last two days as candidates along with their supporters were seen visiting homes to distribute pamphlets with their achievements and manifestos.
As many as 87 candidates are contesting in 31 wards of three panchayats of Socorro, Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo in Porvorim constituency.
Khaunte is the lone politician who has fielded panels in all three panchayats, while none of the other major parties like Congress, TMC, AAP, NCP or RG have fielded their panels or have declared support to candidates.
Two couples are contesting elections each in Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo panchayats.
While Anurag Gupta (Ward 9) and his wife Shalu (Ward 10) are contesting in Penha de Franca panchayat, Rajesh Savoikar (Ward 8) and his wife Roshni (Ward 9) are contesting in Salvador do Mundo panchayat.
Three candidates, Sandeep Salgaonkar (Ward 2) and Reena Fernandes (Ward 3) in Salvador do Mundo and Siddhesh Naik (Ward 8) in Penha de Franca panchayat have been elected unopposed. The post of sarpanch has been reserved for women in Salvador do Mundo and Penha de Franca panchayats.
