Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced that the highway link road connecting Patradevi to the upcoming Mopa international airport will be named after Goa freedom struggle martyr Karnail Singh Benipal from Ambala, Haryana.

Sawant said, Benipal was killed during the firing by the Portuguese forces at Patradevi in 1955, when a Satyagraha was held there on August 15.

“The road will be named after martyr Karnail Singh as per his family's request,” Sawant said while speaking in Ambala after felicitating the martyr's widow Charanjeet Kaur.

The chief minister also presented a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to the martyr's family.

“Goa is eternally indebted to the satyagrahis, freedom fighters and their families who laid down their lives for its liberation,” Sawant, who was accompanied by BJP's Ambala City MLA Aseem Goel, said.

Sawant said the entire country is observing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to mark 75 years of India's independence and unsung heroes are also being remembered.

Certificates of honour were presented to the relatives of such freedom fighters from Goa and 10 others from various parts of the country, he said.
