From September, parking for four-wheelers on the 18th June Road, the parallel Atmaram Borkar road and around the Garcia de Orta garden will no longer be free and it’s going to cost by the hour, mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) Uday Madkaikar said on Thursday. There will, however, be no cost for two-wheeler parking spaces in the city.
Further, cars that are found parked in ‘no-parking’ zones in the capital city will be clamped. Panaji MLA Atanasio Monserrate has procured 200 clamps for the CCP for the purpose, and has promised to get more if required, the mayor said.
The CCP hopes that both the moves help in de-congesting the capital city, the mayor said. “We want less people to bring their cars into the city,” said Madkaikar. While the CCP had decided to clamp cars parked in no-parking zones a long time ago, they did not have the clamps. Now finally, they are good to go.
The mayor said that the tender for the pay parking will be put out soon, and the contractor will have to pay the CCP an amount of Rs 40 lakh a year from money collected from cars. Rs 25 will be charged for two hours in these three designated spaces, and Rs 15 for every hour exceeding that. The mayor said that there have been 165 car-parking slots on 18th June Road, 179 slots on Atmaram Borkar road, and 102 parking slots around the Garcia de Orta garden.
These areas had already been notified earlier. When asked about pay parking in the area from Sharda Mandir School and beyond on the Miramar road, the mayor said the area has not yet been notified.
The current pay parking plan of the CCP has got nothing to do with the Smart City body (IPSCDL)’s proposed pay parking plan, the mayor specified.
When asked about the vehicles of casino employees, the mayor said that all these vehicles will be parked in the multi-level parking facility. The CCP will also try to get the ground floor of the facility for the 300 odd two wheelers of casino employees.
