Pay parking project comes back to haunt Madgavkars

Proposal listed on agenda of MMC meet today

Pay parking project comes back to haunt Madgavkars

MARGAO
Around two decades after the Margao Municipal Council was forced by Madgavkars to scrap the pay parking project, the proposal has come back to haunt the Margao City Fathers and citizens alike.

For, the issue of pay parking proposal, to levy parking charges on vehicles parked along roadsides, has been listed on the agenda of the Margao Municipal Council meeting scheduled on Monday.

The proposal mooted by the Margao Traffic Cell has found mention in the Council meeting  agenda approved by MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira.

The pay parking project was first introduced in the city around two decades ago during the tenure of then MMC Chairperson Kamlini Painginkar. The proposal evoked all-round criticism from citizens, which later prompted the young Congress workers to ride a two-wheeler into the MMC chairperson’s chamber as a symbolic mark of protest.

Since the pay parking proposal has been kept in cold storage, with successive councils and chairpersons keeping the matter on the backburner on grounds that the Council cannot introduce pay parking on vehicles parked when the civic body has failed to provide any public parking facility in the city.

In fact, the MMC has been struggling to execute the multi-level parking project over the last half-a-decade, and has now finally knocked on the doors of the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to make the parking lot a reality.
