VASCO
Stating that there were no plans at present for an alliance with other parties at the upcoming assembly polls, AICC election observer for Goa P Chidambaram is reported to have assured that all party blocks would be consulted before any final decision is taken on an alliance.
Sources said Chidambaram was addressing a closed-door meeting with party workers of Vasco constituency.
According to sources, Chidambaram made it clear that as of now, the Congress was not thinking on definite plans for an alliance with other parties and said an alliance would be decided at a later stage and based on public sentiments.
“Chidambaram asked all blocks to interact with the people and to be taken them into confidence to ascertain if they wanted the Congress to form an alliance with other parties. He said there may be party blocks and people of particular area who may feel there is no able leader to contest on the Congress ticket and they may suggest an alliance with other parties. In such a case, the party can think about it at a later stage,” said the source.
“Chidambaram made it clear that all blocks would be consulted and only after a feedback from people of the constituency and discussion with block committees, would there be discussions about an alliance.”
“He made it clear that priority as of now is to work for the party and strengthen its base and support in every constituency, with or without alliance in mind,” the source said.
“Chidambaram insisted that it was only a strong block that could bring back the Congress in power from every constituency and urged the workers to unitedly work with the single aim of getting the party candidates elected from each constituency,” said the source.
“He claimed that the common man was angered with sparing prices of fuel and LPG gas cylinders and vowed to reduce the prices of fuel in Goa if the party came to power,” said the source.
“Chidambaram also made it clear that presently the Congress was getting a tremendous response from every constituency and that it was now in the hands of party workers to make the best use of the situation and take it to the advantage of the party,” the source added.
The source further said that the delegation of leaders that descended in Vasco included Central leader Dinesh Gundu Rao, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, Leader of Opposition and former CM Digambar Kamat, GPCC President Girish Chodankar, Secretary Saifullah Khan, former Minister Aleixo Sequiera, Vasco block committee President Ularico Rodrigues and others.
