MARGAO
Citizens coming to the commercial capital were greeted by foul sewage odour near the Margao Municipal Council square as an underground sewage chamber overflowed since Monday morning, with the sewage water flowing down towards the municipal building.
It was only around noon that PWD workers rushed in to cap the chamber after cleaning the underground line which was choked with waste.
This isn’t the first time that the chamber in question or the adjoining sewage chambers have posed nuisance to the general public. In fact, the chambers of the newly-laid sewage line have been found overflowing several times in recent times, with PWD official citing blockage as the reasons behind the phenomenon.
Questions are being raised why the newly-laid underground sewage line has been experiencing the problem of blockage, raising a stink in the heart of the town. A shop owner told The Goan that overflowing sewage chambers have become a routine phenomenon in and around the Margao Municipal-Communidade square, raising a stink and posing nuisance for the public.
“We have observed that PWD workers clear the line after the chambers overflow. But, we feel the PWD should check the entire line to find out why the it gets choked every now and then,” the shop owner demanded.
Sources said the underground sewage line was laid and commissioned only a few months ago and the frequent blockage of the line resulting in the chambers spewing sewage water on the busy and congested roads.
