Appealing to people to keeping aside their political differences and work united for the development of their village, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the development of villages would lead to the progress of the state, which in turn, would lead to the prosperity of the nation.

Khaunte was speaking at Salai after unfurling the national flag at an event organised by Salvador do Mundo panchayat to mark Republic Day.

“India is one of the largest democracies in the world and India will have the largest youth workforce in over next 5 years. The knowledge of India’s Constitution is very important and every youth should read the Constitution to learn about the rights bestowed on them,” said Khaunte.

“The 73rd and 74th amendments to the Indian Constitution have bestowed enough powers to panchayats and they should use these powers to make their village Atmarnirbhar and Swayampurna to avail of government schemes."

Stating that the people are supreme in a democracy, the Porvorim MLA said citizens must express their opinion on every issue concerning his village or State.

Salvador do Mundo Sarpanch Sandeep Salgaonkar welcomed the gathering, while students of Srimati Sunandabai Bandodkar High School at Salai participated in the programme.
