Independent candidate for the Cortalim ZP poll Merciana Vas has said voters seek results, transparency and accountability, and not promises only during elections.
Shea was speaking to media persons during her campaign at Bogmalo and Velsao on Wednesday.
Vas said the growing response reflected people’s desire for honest and accountable representation.
She said her decision to contest as an independent was driven by the need to work without pressure and remain answerable only to the people.
“This election is about choosing a representative who will speak for the people without fear or favour. I am contesting as an independent so that I can work freely and raise local issues without any political pressure,” Vas said.
Vas said her campaign across Cortalim had been based on direct interaction rather than large gatherings, allowing her to reconnect personally with residents who had supported her earlier. She said this continued connect had helped her understand expectations and maintain transparency in her work.
“I believe in being present on the ground. Development does not happen from offices alone; it happens when representatives listen, follow up and stay connected with people,” she said.
She said her years of experience as the sitting ZP member had taught her that consistent follow-up and availability were crucial in delivering results at the grassroots level.
“People know my work and my approach. I have never disappeared after elections and have always been available when residents needed support. That trust is my biggest strength,” she said.
Vas said the response she was receiving across Cortalim indicated a clear shift in voter sentiment. “People today are more aware. They want results, transparency and accountability, not promises made only during elections,” she said.
During interactions with women and youth, Vas said empowering local voices would be her priority.
“The Zilla Panchayat must become a platform where genuine issues from villages are taken seriously and followed up until resolved,” she said.
