PERNEM
When the weekly bazaar is held on the road in the absence of a proper market and when efforts are
made to regularise illegal constructions to generate revenue, it only reflects the sorry state of financial affairs at the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC).
Faced with various challenges in generating revenue and making it difficult to undertake projects on its own, Pernem councillors have even suggested that Pernem town be converted into a panchayat if the PMC cannot undertake development works due to paucity of funds.
As Pernem town does not have revenue generating projects, money collected by the PMC, a ‘C’ Class municipal council, through house tax and Sopo is utilised to pay salaries of the PMC staff and workers.
Ruling Councillor Prashant Gadekar said many hurdles have come in the way of development works as PMC does not get funds on time. “The councillors have also been deprived of honorarium for the last two years and the government has also failed to pay it,” he added.
“The government should convert PMC into panchayat as it will get various village development schemes from the Directorate of Panchayats,” said Gadekar.
PMC Chief Officer Gautami Parmekar said she has directed the people to legalise their constructions. “Most of the houses in the jurisdiction of PMC are built by the Mundkars and some don’t get NoC from landlords to construct their houses.”
