One of the big companies from Goa’s distressed mining sector, Chowgule’s, has officially announced a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for the permanent workers at its various mines.

“The company hereby offers a Voluntary Retirement Scheme to all permanent workers at mines in Goa,” says the document signed by A L Prabhu, the company’s general manager (HR).

Workers on permanent rolls of the company and who have completed 10 years of service or completed 40 years of age as of December 13 this year are eligible to opt for the scheme, it states.

The compensation payable to the worker opting for the VRS will be two-months (60 days) salary for each completed year of service or salary for the period of service left till date of superannuation, whichever is less, according to the scheme.

Six months and more of service will be considered as one year and service less than six months will be ignored, it said, adding that all compensation and dues resulting out of the scheme shall be paid within 30 days from the date on which the applicant workman is relieved of his services.

The company had provided the workers, wishing to opt for the VRS, three days of time to apply in the prescribed format between December 13 to 15 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday).

It is the first mining firm in Goa to opt for shedding its workforce through VRS since operations in the industry came to a grinding halt from March this year when the Supreme Court cancelled all iron ore leases holding illegal their validation through a “second renewal” by the Government of Goa.
