PERNEM
Safai workers and contract workers of the Pernem Municipal Council have not been paid for the past three months, despite continuing to do their cleaning jobs.
When asked why the workers had not been paid, Siddhesh Pednekar, chairperson of the Pernem Municipal Council, said that the council’s treasury was facing a paucity of funds. “That’s why we are finding difficulty in paying the salaries,” he said.
The situation of paucity of funds has been a state of affairs for the past few years. The council has failed to collect the pending dues from various sources. There have been many new constructions but revenue is not being collected. Notably, the indoor stadium constructed at a cost of Rs 37 crore has pending revenue dues of Rs 2 crore.
