PERNEM
The Multipurpose Indoor Stadium in Pernem was taken over by authorities months ago amid plans to convert it into a Covid care centre, but the proposed centre is yet to start till date and it has now turned into a 'couple care corner' for many couples to hang around after dusk.
Following the efforts of Pernem MLA and Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar, the government spent an estimated Rs 37 crore to build the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium at Sawalwaddo, Pernem.
The indoor stadium was then requisitioned by authorities for the proposed Covid care centre some months ago and infrastructure was even set up at the site.
However till date, the Covid care centre is yet to be put into use and in the absence of proper security, the premises has attracted couples after dusk.
Locals are now upset about the immoral activities in the premises and Pernem Municipal Council Deputy Chairperson Gajanan Sawal Desai has asked Pernem police to look into the matter.
"There is one main gate to the stadium and there is no security guard placed at the gate. Many couples visit the premises in their vehicles. Who will be held responsible if something happens in the premises,” asked Desai.
A local said a major fight had taken place between a couple in the stadium premises around two days ago.
“The arguments were loud and could be heard from afar. Later, the woman left the place in another vehicle," he said.
