Pernem MLAs differ on IIT proposed at Tuem

PERNEM

The State government’s plans to set up the proposed IIT in Tuem-Pernem, after it was rejected in three other sites across the State, has evoked differing statements from Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte and Deputy Chief Minister and Pernem MLA Babu Ajgaonkar.

While Ajgaonkar said he was unaware of any such project and insisted that locals have to be taken into confidence, Sopte said he would welcome the IIT if it is set up in Tuem.

“If a leading institution such as an IIT is set up in my constituency, I will welcome it as it would be a major step for the education sector. As MLA, I will always support such projects and make sure the locals are fully informed about the proposed project,” said Sopte.

On the other hand, Ajgaonkar said he was unaware about the project.

"I don't have any idea about the project proposed at Tuem. But any new project should be set up only after taking locals into confidence. No project should be completed without the support and cooperation from the public.”

“Besides, water and other issues should also be resolved before bringing in any new projects," said Ajgaonkar.
