MARGAO
The contempt petition filed by daily wage workers against the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) will be heard by the High Court on January 8.
The workers again approached the High Court in December, claiming that the MMC has failed to regularise their services as directed by the court in its order dated August 4, 2025.
In their petition, the workers have asked the court to start contempt proceedings against the MMC and take action against the civic body. They have also requested the court to direct the MMC to immediately follow the August 4, 2025 judgment. This includes issuing regularisation orders in their favour from the date of their appointment on March 2, 2020, and paying the difference in salary along with all related service benefits due to them as regular workers from that date.
The workers have stated that despite the clear court order, the MMC has not regularised their services. Instead, they allege that the civic body is forcing them to apply under a temporary status scheme, even though the court had ordered regularisation.
Meanwhile, the daily wage workers and their family members have decided to go on a hunger strike to protest against the MMC’s decision to cut their wages. They said they were earlier receiving about Rs 19,000 per month, but this has now been reduced to Rs 14,000 for reasons not explained by the authorities.
