Petitioner informs HC of Sunburn death, detention of youths

PANAJI

The High Court of Bombay at Goa was on Tuesday informed about the death of a youth, Karan Kashyap, due to a suspected drug overdose. Kashyap, a 26-year-old IIT topper from Delhi, collapsed at the Sunburn EDM venue in Dhargalim and was declared dead at Vision Hospital in Mapusa.

The court was also informed about the detention of five youths, including one Goan, for alleged drug consumption. The Goa Police claimed the youths had allegedly consumed drugs outside the venue, though they were later found at the event held from Dec 28“30, 2024.

The High Court adjourned the matter to February 11, allowing the petitioner to place relevant information on record.

While the Goa Police confirmed Kashyap attended the Sunburn event and sent viscera samples for forensic analysis, organisers expressed their condolences over his death while reiterating their zero-tolerance policy on substance abuse. They stated that medical assistance was promptly provided, but efforts to revive Kashyap were unsuccessful.

Last month, the High Court granted permission for the three-day Sunburn EDM festival to be held at Dhargalim, subject to strict compliance with conditions regarding noise pollution, traffic management and public safety, among others. The court also directed the organisers to adhere to previous directives issued by the High Court and the Goa government.
