Stating that Pilerne-Marra and Reis Magos panchayats have excelled at garbage management in Saligao constituency, Housing Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar has admitted that Nerul, Guirim and Sangoda panchayats are economically weak and a little slow in tackling garbage problem.
He was addressing a gathering at Nerul, where he had gone to distribute dustbins to locals at a function organised by the Nerul Panchayat.
“Despite their limited resources, these economically weaker panchayats are doing their best to tackle garbage problem. If the state government provides these panchayats with sufficient funds, they will also be able to handle garbage effectively.”
Salgaonkar said it is the responsibility of all residents to maintain cleanliness in their respective residential areas.
“Residents should realise that throwing garbage by the roadside is an offence,” said Salgaonkar. The minister further mentioned that Nerul panchayat has identified a place to develop a children’s park and said he would work towards this project.
Admitting that Coco beach at Nerul lacks infrastructure, Salgaonkar said he has initiated steps to improve the same on the beach to attract more tourists.
“Efforts to resolve the problems of water shortage and frequent power outages are in the pipeline,” Salgaonkar added.
Earlier in her welcome address, Nerul Sarpanch Piedade Almeida said two dustbins have been given initially to each residents in Wards 1 and 2 to segregate their garbage. “Dustbins are being distributed to residents who have paid house and garbage tax to the panchayat.
The panchayat will start door-to-door garbage collection shortly,” said Almeida.
