Minister for Public Works Ramakrishna "Sudin" Dhavalikar on Tuesday disclosed that the ongoing work on construction of the eight-lane cable-stayed new Zuari Bridge has run into a minor delay of around 15 to 20 days due to the redesigning of the pile foundation.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Panjai, Dhavalikar stated that on the basis of the geological exploration data, the consultants will review the design for laying the pile foundations on the bedrock.
"The problem here is pile foundation. Wherever a pile foundation is being done and the strata are weak, one needs to dig deeper to ensure that the foundation is on strong rock. At the Zuari bridge site, the length of the pile under the water is more than 40 metres. So, we have to redesign the pile for the stability of the bridge. That is the reason there is a small delay of about 15 to 20 days," Dhavalikar said.
The contract for the construction of the new Zuari Bridge was awarded to Ukrainian firm Mostobudivelnyi Zahin Ltd (MBZ) and Dilip Buildcon in April 2016.
The first pile of the new Zuari bridge has been laid at 28-odd mts, the second pile at 35 mts and the piles are designed for 28 to 35 mts.
Once the pile foundation laying is completed, if any design procedure is required, the state government will ensure that all designs are perfect and approved by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways.
The PWD Minister reaffirmed the government's plan to complete the Zuari Bridge by December 2019 by undertaking the work in a time-bound manner.
"This is a small delay. There is no problem with the superstructure. Once the position of piles, piers and pillars is finalized, we will begin work on the design of the superstructure," he said.
