The South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has submitted to the Court of Deputy Collector, Margao that the PDA has drawn up plans to flush out fish water deposited in the market and eject the same in the adjoining river Sal after the water is purified.
In a reply filed in a revision application filed by a resident of Madel, Savio Dias pertaining to the wholesale fish market, the PDA submitted that issues such as hygiene and sanitation is under control both through the efforts of the Authority and through the government working through various departments, including the district Collectorate.
The PDA member secretary further submitted before the Deputy Collector that the PDA has allotted an area admeasuring 500 square metres specifically for the purpose of waste treatment to Dr Shrikant Mutneri, BITS Pilani, which has developed a method titled vertical wetlands for treatment of effluents/sewerage, wherein all the liquid/wet waste will be treated on the site.
The PDA submitted that the Court of Deputy Collector has no jurisdiction to entertain the application made by Dias since it deals with the issue of formalin used in fish. The PDA pointed out that it is not the duty or obligation of the Authority to determine the formalin in fish, saying this duty falls in the domain of the Fisheries Department, demanding to know how the Authority is responsible for the presence of formalin in the fish sold at the wholesale fish market.
