A constable attached to Margao District Police Head Quarters was on Thursday arrested for allegedly raping a minor. The accused, identified as Vijay Gaunekar, aged 28 years, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by the survivor’s father at Ponda police station on Wednesday night.
The constable is a resident of Pansulem in Dharbandora. The complainant accused the constable of raping his daughter repeatedly over a considerable period of time and threatening her to not reveal the incident to anyone. The victim however confided in her family narrating the ordeal after which a police complaint was filed.
The Ponda police have registered an offense under Section 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act, and Sections 4 & 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act against him, shortly after which he was placed under arrest. While he has been remanded to police custody for custodial interrogation, the department is expected to release his suspension order on Friday.
