Police plaint against contractor for roping workers from other states sans verification

Police plaint against contractor for roping workers from other states sans verification

VASCO
NGO Savera led by president Tara Kerkar on Saturday filed a police complaint against a Mangor based contractor for roping in many workers and labourers from other states and failing to conduct their police verification.

Kerkar demanded that an FIR be lodged against the contractor and strict action be initiated for endangering lives amid the pandemic. However, the ward councillor said that the police had always been doing a good job and that social workers should point out issues instead of blaming anyone.

"The contractor has got nearly 70 workers from other states, and for the last 20 days, though the labourers have been given work, their police verification is not done. The workers have not been put under a health check nor placed under quarantine but are in a shed on the site without carrying out any formalities. We are not sure of their background nor their health status and while they can cause the spread of Covid, who will be responsible if they commit a crime and vanish? We also feel some workers are child labourers and police must check their credentials," said Kerkar.

Meanwhile, MMC Ward Councillor Saifullah Khan speaking to media said that as a councillor he would always enquire with any new faces in his area to check for the background of the person.

"The police are doing a good job and have already carried an inspection on the site, questioned the workers about the details, checked for all the status of the workers, and also got their police verification done. This is necessary and we must help the police by pointing out any such incidents, and simply talking and filing complains will not help," said Khan.
