Perhaps for the first time since the Men-in-uniform arrested Margao Municipal LDC Yogesh Shetkar for allegedly embezzling feast fair revenue to the tune of Rs 17.96 lakh, police personnel descended in the Municipal building on Tuesday as part of the ongoing investigations in the sensational case.
Questions, however, remains unanswered whether the police will only interrogate the lower Municipal staff or the superiors as well, who were found lax in supervising and monitoring the daily collection of revenue from the fair.
Police personnel were seen in the taxation section of the Margao Municipal building on Tuesday evening as part of the investigations. Inquiries have only revealed that the police had apparently come to record the statements of the market inspectors, who were also deployed for the Holy Spirit feast fair.
The police presence in the MMC building only threw up questions amongst the lower Municipal staff whether the police will summon senior Municipal officials, for not questioning the accused LDC for days together for collecting the revenue from the fair when he was not mandated to collect the revenue.
“If the police is sincere in the investigations and want to get to the root of the issue, the Men-in-uniform should take the statements of the senior Municipal officials for the alleged laxity in permitting the accused LDC to collect the fair revenue”, remarked a Municipal official.
The official added: “Let the probe be free and fair. The Margao police headed by PI Tulsidas Naik should place in public domain the outcome of the investigations carried out by the police officers so far in the fraud since the arrest of LDC Yogesh Shetkar. The police should unveil the details of the money trail before the expiry of the seven days remand period”.
