Police urge citizens to ensure tenant verification

PANAJI

Landlords, hotel and guest house owners besides contractors have been asked to submit to police stations the tenant and guest verification forms to the respective police stations to help in investigations of major crimes in which such temporary residents are involved.

The Goa police department has also simultaneously launched a tenant verification drive.

In recent years, in several cases of heinous crimes reported in Goa, involvement of migrants, tourists and outstation labourers had come to light. However, in the absence of proper tenant and guest verification, tracking down the culprits was an uphill task for the men-in-uniform.

In the backdrop of a large floating population in Goa, including tourists, such tenant and guest verification is imperative, police said, adding that often anti-social elements, hardcore criminals, fugitives and absconding criminals may seek refuge in the State as a tenant.

Police said, in such a scenario it is dangerous both for the property owners as well as the security of localities in the State if tenants are leased out rooms without due diligence and complying with the formality of submitting the verification forms to the police with the relevant personal information of the tenants.
