The ongoing winter session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, which began today in Belagavi, is expected to be a contentious one, with significant political and social issues on the agenda.
The session will run until December 19 and focuses on addressing regional and statewide concerns, particularly those affecting North Karnataka.
As Belagavi is hosting Chief Minister Siddramiah and his cabinet colleagues including the MLAs and MLCs, assisted by their secretaries and bureaucrats, key issues anticipated to dominate the discussion include the implementation of Kalsa-Bhandura water diversion project, maternal health crisis, corruption allegations, protests and agitations.
Apart from the government’s non-committal attitude to implement the contentious Kalsa-Bhandura water diversion issue, the opposition BJP and JD(S) are highlighting the alarming number of maternal deaths in Ballari, which has reached 327 this year. These issues are expected to lead to intense debate.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s appearance before the Lokayukta regarding the Mysuru Urban Development Authority scam has provided fuel for opposition criticism however, the Congress government aims to emphasise its public welfare efforts, including measures for marginalized communities and ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Kalsa-Bhandura water diversion project for which Chief Minister Siddramiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister earlier this month.
The winter session is also a platform for the Congress government to defend its policies following its recent by-election victories, while the opposition seeks to challenge its governance on multiple fronts. Political experts predict a dynamic and eventful session.
Meanwhile, various groups, including farmers, NGOs are stating protests. The Kudalasangama Panchamasali Peeth, is staging protests during the session to demand enhanced reservations under the 2A category. The government has prepared measures to manage these protests while ensuring democratic expression.
The session coincides with the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s 1924 address at the Congress session in Belagavi, with commemorative events planned.
