Almost 109 elected women representatives from the panchayats will elect the Goa Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan (GPMSA) committee for Bardez on September 19.
The women panch members will elect a president, vice president, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer and joint treasurer to form the Bardez GPMSA block.
Similar elections will be held in all the 12 talukas across the State and women elected representatives of the respective panchayats will elect the GPMSA committee in each block.
"Each of these taluka block committees will then elect representative for the two district-level committees for each district - North and South Goa. The two district committees will in turn elect the State executive committee of the GPMSA," a senior BDO official informed.
The central government under the Ministry of Panchayati Raj introduced the innovative Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan (PMSA) scheme to give the rural women more strength. The scheme is meant for the elected women representatives to build confidence and capacity so that they get over the institutional, societal and political constraints that prevent them from active participation in rural local self-government.
The district-level committees of the GPMSA will have to ensure that elected women panch members are aware about various gender-related issues. The district committees are also required to help illiterate elected women representatives by enrolling them in informal education courses. Further, the district committees will have to communicate proceedings of the State executive committee to all other elected women representatives.
