Youth gets 6 months jail for trying to escape

PANAJI
Judicial Magistrate First Class, Pernem, has sentenced one Caitan D'Souza from Taliwada, Chandel, in Pernem, to six months in prison while imposing a fine of Rs 9,000 for attempting to escape while in custody of Calangute Police in February 2013.
In 2013, D'Souza was booked by Calangute Police under Section 307 (attempt to murder) read with Section 34 (common intention) of IPC.
According to the chargesheet filed by Pernem Police on February 7, 2013, at around 4 pm, Calangute Police drove D'Souza, who was then 21 years of age, in a police jeep to Chandel in Pernem to verify his residential address as part of their ongoing investigation.
The accused told the police driver to stop the vehicle near the Taliwada Chapel in Chandel and pointed at a house which was at a walking distance from the main road. Accordingly, the police personnel alighted from the jeep to verify the address. Taking this opportunity, the accused pushed the escorting staff and ran towards the bushes behind his house. When the police chased him, he jumped into a trench.
D'Souza was finally nabbed at a distance of 50 mts from his house.

Committees for regularisation of structures in Bardez soon

MAPUSA The State government has decided to constitute two committees to look into the applications seeking regularization of illegal structures in Bardez taluka.
