Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said elections are never forced on anyone but just conducted as a procedure and a part of democracy.
Sawant was speaking to reporters after paying a condolence visit along with Urban Development Minister Milind Naik to the house of Commander Nishant Singh, who lost his life in a MiG-29 crash in the Arabian sea off Goa on November 26.
Reacting to the low voter turnout and allegations among certain quarters that the State government had been responsible for low turnout, Sawant said the voting percentage would surely go up to 50% by end of polling.
"Elections cannot be forced on anyone. There are other states where elections were also conducted and these ZP elections were to be conducted some day or the other. It is a part of democracy and a routine procedure,” said Sawant.
This chief minister said the death of Commander Singh was not only a loss to his family but a big loss to the nation as well.
"I actually wanted to be a part of the final rites ceremony of late Commander Singh yesterday but I could not make it and hence, I arrived today to pay a condolence visit to his family here.”
“We offered our condolence to his family on behalf of the State and we met his family in the presence of Rear Admiral Philipose G Pynumootil,” said Sawant.
