Pollution Board nod must for dairy farms

All dairy farms and gaushalas will now be directly monitored by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). The Board has asked all dairy farms and gaushala units in the State to obtain consent to establish and consent to operate within 30 days.

Due to the Covid situation, applications have to be made online through the Online Consent Management & Monitoring System (OCMMS) system on www.goaocmms.in within the next 30 days.

The GSPCB has issued a public notice regarding the same.

According to the notification, dairy farms and gaushalas are now categorized as per the categorization of industries and have to obtain consent to establish and consent to operate under the Water Act 1974 and Air Act 1981.

Commercial dairy farms having 15 animals and more, are in the orange category and gausahlas where cows are housed for rehabilitation and having waste water more than 100 KLD are classified under orange category. The rest are classified under green category.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has earlier issued guidelines for the management of wastes from dairy farms and gaushalas and had issued methods for disposal of solid waste, wastewater, and air quality management.

The apex body has already suggested composting/vermin-composting, utilization of solid wastes (dung) as fuel, and biogas/compressed biogas methods for disposal of cow dung.
