PANAJI: The translation of the 151-year-old Portuguese Civil Code into English has been completed and the Goa government has made it available for the public.
Spanning over 330 pages and divided into four parts, the Civil Code was enacted on July 1, 1867. Bombay High Court had asked the State government to translate the law into English on March 24, 2017. Obeying the order the state government undertook the translation.
Goa's Portuguese Civil Code is the only law in the country which comes close to a uniform civil code. Provisions dealing with marriages, property rights, adoption and inheritance are included in the set of laws.
