Amid ongoing challenges faced by motorists and residents navigating the Porvorim stretch of the National Highway-66, construction work on the six-lane elevated corridor has gained momentum.

The contractor is expected to commence the launch of pre-stressed concrete segments by this weekend.

The segment launcher has already been installed at the Hotel Neo Majestic end, marking the starting point for segment launching.

While the Public Works Department (PWD) officials have not confirmed a specific date, they indicated that operations are likely to begin by this weekend.

“The launching of the segments will start by this weekend. The plan is to launch segments for four spans on each side, completing eight spans in total per month,” said Jude Carvalho, Executive Engineer of PWD (National Highway).

Each span will measure 40 to 50 metres in length, and each pre-cast segment will be between 2.5 to 3 metres long. The corridor will feature 43 spans of 40 metres and 45 spans of 50 metres, culminating in a total of 1431 segments.

The casting yard in Guirim has completed pre-casting the segments, with 11 spans ready for installation.

“The yard is full, so the launching must commence soon,” Carvalho added.

The segment launching will be conducted round the clock, necessitating road closures to ensure safety.

“These are massive spans, and it is unsafe to allow traffic during the launching process,” said Carvalho.

However, the contractor is expected to minimise disruption, particularly on the Hotel Neo Majestic side, where ample space allows for operations without affecting traffic flow.

Preparations are also underway for segment launching on the Sangolda side.

“The goal is to launch segments for eight spans monthly. If achieved, the project will remain on schedule,” Carvalho stated.

The elevated corridor spans 5.15 kilometres, stretching from Sangolda junction to Hotel Neo Majestic at Porvorim. Construction began in mid-April 2024, with a completion deadline of April 2026.

Once operational, the elevated corridor is expected to alleviate traffic congestion along the busy Porvorim stretch, providing commuters with a smoother and safer travel experience.
