Stating that work on the elevated corridor in Porvorim is proceeding according to schedule, Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has said the elevated corridor will be ready for use by August 2026.
He also informed that work on the Porvorim Town Square is being expedited and will be ready by April 2026. “The Porvorim Town Square is a unique state-of-the-art project in India and will be an attraction for tourists,” said Khaunte.
He was speaking at Porvorim after laying the foundation stone for the Panchayat Library near Hanuman Temple. ZP member Kavita Naik, Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar, panch members and locals were present on the occasion.
Khaunte said the library is being built under the Deen Dayal Upadhaya Scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 3.2 crore and will be completed within six months. “This is a ground plus two-storeyed structure. On the ground floor, there will be a provision for training in sports like karate and taekwondo. On the first floor, there will be a full-fledged library and a small digital library,” said Khaunte.
“There was a request from senior citizens to make a provision for a post office as well. Accordingly, space has been marked for a post office and after discussing this matter with post office officials, the space will be handed over to them.”
“On the second floor, there will be a small hall for functions like birthdays, health camps, etc. A provision of washrooms for ladies and gents has been made in this structure. The building will have a lift facility for senior citizens to visit the library and the hall,” Khaunte added.
Khaunte also mentioned that work to lay underground electric cables has been completed.
Incidentally, progress on the six-lane elevated corridor project at Porvorim has slowed considerably over the past three months, raising concerns that its completion deadline may be extended by nearly a year “ from the current target of November 2026 to sometime in 2027.
According to recent comments by an official from the contracting company executing the project, work has reduced by almost 50 percent in recent months, with half the machinery and labourers lying idle.
Once completed, the Porvorim elevated corridor “ a vital link between Panaji and Mapusa “ is expected to dramatically ease congestion along this key stretch of NH-66, improving travel safety and reducing commuting time for thousands of daily road users.
