Even as the Goa government claimed that the repair work of Tillari canal has been completed, the water woes in Porvorim and Saligao areas continued due to non-release of raw water from the canal to the State till date. The PWD officials are hopeful to resolve the water crisis by December 30.
Since the raw water from Tillari has been stopped to carry out canal repair works, the 15MLD plant in Porvorim has been shut down since November and the same cannot resume operations till water is released.
Water resources minister Subhash Shirodkar had announced that repair works on Tillari ended on December 22 and water supply to Goa will resume. However, due to a glitch in the gates of the dam of the Tillari reservoir in Maharashtra, the supply has not resumed till date.
“We are hopeful that the water from Tillari canal will be released to us in next one or two days thereby resuming the water supply to the people of Porvorim and Saligao areas from December 30. We are in touch with the officials in Maharashtra,” PWD officials said.
At present, water is supplied on alternate days to Porvorim and Saligao areas however, the supply being insufficient the citizens have expressed their anger. People are forced to opt for tankers to overcome the shortfall.
Currently, the water supply is routed from the Assonora plant. Additional water is being pumped as a temporary arrangement from River Sal into Amthane dam and from there it is supplied to the Assonora plant for treatment.
