Power department irked as waste dumped near transformers

VASCO

Officials at the electricity department have criticised the heaps of garbage scattered around transformers at various locations in Vasco and have now asked the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to maintain cleanliness around the transformers.

Speaking to reporters, a senior official at the Vasco electricity department said the department had earlier written to MMC about cleanliness around transformers.

"The areas around transformers at most locations have become garbage dumping sites. People also urinate there, making it practically impossible for our staff to attend to an emergency. Sometimes we cannot even take up work and vehicles also cannot be parked at the site to carry out any work," said the official.

"In the past, there was a huge fire at the transformer box in the crowded Vasco Municipal market, because an establishment had dumped empty wooden boxes and packaging cartons near the transformer box, which caught fire and later spread to the transformer box.”

"The MMC must get the garbage cleared around the transformers because it is difficult for our staff to access the sites filled with garbage and stench.”

“The area around the transformer also attracts rodents and stray animals, which can be dangerous for everyone. The MMC must take our request seriously and act immediately in the matter," the official added.
