Power Dept unveils ambitious infra development roadmap

PANAJI

Power Minister Ramkrishna Alias ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar has announced that the electricity department will undertake major works worth Rs 1,600 crore from October 15 to Dussehra in various constituencies of Goa.

Development projects are planned for Cortalim, Dabolim, Vasco, Benaulim, Loutulim, Fatorda, Panaji, Santa Cruz, Taligao, St. Andre, Velim, Margao, and Curtorim constituencies.

Dhavalikar stated, “To ensure uninterrupted power supply in these areas, work will commence on laying underground cables of 11 KVA, installing 63 MVA transformers, and electrical conductors.”

Similar electrical projects were initiated on March 30, the auspicious day of Ramnavami, in Ponda. Low-tension wires were laid for households, and high-tension wires were installed to support industrial units. These projects are nearing completion, with engineers and linesmen working diligently to enhance service.

“Once the Rs 1,600 crore worth of electrical projects are finished, Goa’s residents will enjoy round-the-clock, uninterrupted power supply,” Dhavalikar added.

Over the past year, electrical projects worth Rs 2,640 crore have been initiated, including a Rs 300 crore sub-station in Saligao. Provisions have been made for laying underground cables of 11 KVA and 33 KVA in Cumbharjua and Mayem, as well as underground cables in St. Andre.

Dhavalikar emphasized that efforts to increase the electricity department’s revenue are ongoing, and no energy tariff hikes have occurred so far. It is expected that around Rs 400 crore in revenue will be generated by the end of March 2024, and ongoing projects will gain momentum after the monsoon.

A Rs 10 crore, 63 KVA transformer has been installed at Verna Industrial Estate to ensure uninterrupted power supply in various constituencies, and it will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on October 21.

Additionally, a provision of Rs 9 crore has been made for laying underground cables at Swantantra Path in Vasco, as mentioned by the minister.
