Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) is working in close coordination with the Electricity Department to restore the power supply to the Peddem sports Complex which has been disrupted with the breakdown of the transformer, which happened a few days back on account of the unseasonal rains accompanied by strong winds.
“Due to rain accompanied by thunder the transformer got burnt and a tender had been issued which will be opened tomorrow,” a top official informed.
The cost of the transformer is close to Rs 24 lakhs and in the meantime to keep the essential sports activities on track the SAG is taking the help of a generator, an official said.
“We are closely working with the Electricity dept to resolve this issue,” added the official.
Meanwhile the Sports Authority of Goa is appointing a new in charge for Peddem Sports Complex, the order which will be issued today, while other minor works at the Complex have started.
Asked for his comments on the frequent breakdown of the transformer and the current power outage affecting sports activities at the Khelo India Centre, Peddem, Khelo India Goa representative Sumith Mohan said: “Initially, the issue was caused due to a complete panel failure in the main gym hall, which has since been rectified. However, the current breakdown pertains to the transformer, which was damaged due to a lightning/thunder strike. The transformer is an expensive component, and necessary action has already been initiated for its replacement.”
The tender process for procurement and repair has been completed, and the issue is expected to be resolved within the next three days. All efforts are being made to restore power at the earliest so that the Khelo India projects in Hockey, Swimming, and other sports disciplines can resume normal functioning without further delay,” he added.
