The Pramod Sawant led government has doubled to Rs 200 the fine for violators of the rule mandating compulsory use of face masks in public.
Sawant took the decision on Monday and the enhanced fines will be implemented starting Tuesday morning.
The decision comes in the backdrop of reports of widespread violation of Covid-19 precautionary measures and physical distancing norms particularly with the opening up of the hospitality sector and tourists flocking in during the Diwali holiday season.
