The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that there was no indication so far of an early onset of monsoon in Goa but the State is expected to receive pre-monsoon showers next week.
The IMD has also said that a low pressure system has developed over the Bay of Bengal which is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm but will not have any significant impact on Goa.
“Currently we are going through a dry spell but there is a possibility of light rains again on May 11 and 12 over Goa. The State will experience such pre-monsoon showers before the onset of normal monsoon which is expected to arrive on June 5,” said Rahul Mohan, senior scientist at IMD Goa.
He said a well-marked low pressure area was developing over Bay of Bengal which will intensify into a depression and then to a cyclonic storm by Sunday (May 8).
“It is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till May 10 evening and reach west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. It is expected to dissipate after May 11 and 12. This system is not likely to have any significant effect over Goa,” Mohan said.
He said such building up of low pressure systems or cyclonic conditions in Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea was quite normal.
According to the scientist, there was no official information from the IMD about an early onset of monsoon in Goa but there is possibility of onset of monsoon in Kerala from the second week of May, probably by May 15 or 16.
“The normal date for monsoons to reach Goa as of now is June 5. It may vary by a day or two or even a week depending on various conditions,” he said.
He said it was too early to predict about an early onset of monsoons.
