With the Election Code of Conduct still in force, the previous Vasco Carnival Committee (VCC) has been dissolved and a new committee has been set up to organise the carnival celebrations in the port town from February 25 to February 28.
Speaking to The Goan, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik said the Vasco Carnival Committee appointed before the assembly election had been dissolved, as the model code of conduct was still in force.
“The new VCC comprises government officials and will be headed by MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik. The other office bearers are Vasco Excise Inspector Mukund Gawas (general secretary), Peter Correia (joint secretary) and MMC Assistant Taxation Officer Raya G Naik (treasurer).”
“The VCC members are MMC municipal engineer-I Manoj Asrekar, Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankwalkar, Seby Mascarenhas and Rony Colaco (vice chairpersons), Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu, Mormugao DySP Laurenco D’Souza, Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo, Vasco Traffic Cell PI Roy Pereira, Assistant Engineer PWD (Buildings) A D Nagarchi, Assistant Director of Transport Abhay Naik, Vasco Fire Station Officer Rahul Dessai and Block Development Officer Deepak Vaigankar (organising secretaries),” the MMC chairperson added.
He informed that the KTC (ATS) Valente Esteves is the coordinator of VCC, while Morgan Coutinho is the joint coordinator and they head a separate 20-member executive committee.
“The Carnival celebration in the port town will start on February 25 and conclude on February 28.”
According to sources, the change in VCC was necessitated on account of the Code of Conduct.
“With the Election Code of Conduct still in force, the previous committee comprising citizens could have been influenced by politicians. As a result, government officials have now been asked to head the committee,” a source told The Goan.
