PANAJI
Puddles of waste water dripping from the fish displayed for sale at the make-shift market in Panaji has become a major concern and vendors said they have no choice but to sweep out the water regularly.
On Wednesday, which is the third day that this new fabricated shed is being used as a temporary fish market, the fish waste water accumulated in puddles were seen all over, especially in the aisle meant for the public to move.
"People who come to buy fish are inconvenienced. We have no choice but to sweep out the water every now and then," said a fish vendor.
"In the old fish market shed from where we were removed and brought here, every platform was lined with gutters and the water would flow out. Here there is no such provision made," the vendor told The Goan.
The new temporary shed also does not have raised platforms forcing vendors to create their own using wooden planks.
The CCP built this temporary fabricated shed a few metres away from the old one to enable it to demolish the old market building where it is planning to construct the third phase of the new market complex.
Although the shed is being termed a "temporary" fish market, it is expected to be the arrangement for at least a couple of years during which the old market building will be demolished and the new fish and meat market is built.
The CCP's technical section meanwhile is working out a blue print for an adequate drainage system in the new shed.
"The shed is build over a flooring of interlocking tiles. It's tough, but a gutter network will have to be built to provide drainage," an engineer in CCP's technical section said.
