Students from the English Department of Goa University (GU) are set to provide a breather for Goans during these stressful political times, in the form of poetry! MA (English) students are having a morning of pure poetry on March 25 under a tree they have located near the MA canteen.
The event, which is open to anyone who simply wishes to express himself or herself, has two categories : one, where people can express themselves on their interpretation of Gandhian values in the form of poetry, and two, an open category where any theme will be allowed.
One of the student organisers Nikita Kurup told ‘The Goan’ that the event was simply a recital, and not a competition, as the department wanted to encourage people to come forth and share their poems, which they are normally hesitant to show the world.
“We’re encouraging people to recite in any language they want to : could be Spanish or Persian! Last year we had Portuguese, so we’re really looking forward to a diversity of languages this year round too,” said Kurup on Friday, adding that the students were really excited about the assistant registrar having signed up this year. “Besides the assistant registrar, our teacher Poorwa Naik has also expressed that she’d like to participate,” said an excited Nikita.
The reason they’re choosing to hold it under the tree is to encourage even passers-by to join in. “We didn’t want to cold or clinical ambiance of an auditorium,” said Nikita.
“The more spontaneous, the better.” Nikita said that they were hoping the poetry on Gandhian values in these stressful political times would start a healthy discourse which would extend beyond the recital. Last year too, the event was held under a tree and had garnered
lots of interest.
Sticking to the theme of pure poetry, there will be no time restriction for poets. The event was envisaged by one of their seniors Aaron Rodrigues last year, and 40 people had participated.
