The Association has slammed the government for its lethargic attitude in addressing their long pending problem when the authorities had been quick to grant licences to shacks on the beaches.
Addressing the media, Association president Dharmesh Sanglani said it’s now two years since the National Green Tribunal had directed the Goa government to prepare a report on the beach carrying capacity, but in vain. “For two years now, the government has neither prepared the report nor has given us licences to operate the shacks in private properties,” Sanglani said, while demanding to know why the government could not prepare the report on the beach carrying capacity for two years.
“Enough is enough as we have received only assurances from the government despite submitting as many as 17 memorandums to the authorities in the last two years,” Sanglani said.
Saying Goa is entering the peak tourist season during the coming week, he said the government should prepare the beach carrying capacity and give them the licenses to operate the shacks in private properties.
He said the livelihood of around 500 private shack owners is at stake for no fault of theirs, while squarely blaming the government for the present crisis. “Last year the government had issued licenses to 117 private shacks, but the same were razed down after the government could not prepare the beach carrying capacity,” he added.
