Taking note of the massive landfilling taking place adjacent to the NH66 in Mapusa, the PWD (NH) has written to the deputy collector, Bardez but landfilling activity continues at the site.
The Assistant Engineer, NH66, Mahesh Shetty in his complaint said that illegal dumping activity was in progress on the side of the service road from Bastora Tar junction onwards in the north.
“During the site inspection, we have found the landfilling activity is blocking the flow of water and mangroves in the area,” Shetty said.
The AE inspected the site soon after the news report appeared in The Goan on January 19.
According to locals, the activity has not stopped but on the contrary increased in pace in the last couple of days as there were attempts to connect the land from NH66 side to the other side in Gaunsavaddo, Mapusa.
Deputy Collector Akshay Potekar informed that he received the letter of the PWD AE which has been forwarded to the Town and Country Planning Department.
“We are waiting for further instructions as the TCP has now forwarded the letter to the Planning and Development Authority (PDA),” Potekar said.
While a prompt decision on the landfilling activity seems to take time due to the bureaucratic process, as the complaint letter moves from one department to another, landfilling continues unabated at the site.
On Sunday The Goan had reported how the landfilling activity was going on by cutting mangrove plantations and burying water bodies in the area.
