VALPOI
The PWD has begun work on the collapsed portion of the Maloli bridge between Valpoi and Nanoda.
A portion of the Portuguese-era bridge at Maloli had collapsed a few days ago, posing a threat to motorists on the bridge which is an important link for Maloli village and five other villages of Satre, Kodal, Derode, Nanoda and Bambar.
There were fears that if the entire bridge were to collapse, it would cut off connectivity between the six villages and Valpoi town, the commercial hub of Sattari.
Valpoi PWD Assistant Engineer Devendra Velingkar inspected the damage to the bridge and repair work began a few days later.
“Work on the bridge began immediately to ensure that people in adjoining villages do not face any problem travelling along the route,” said Velingkar.
“The bridge is old and constructed from laterite stones. We are repairing the collapsed portion with reinforced concrete and the work is expected to be completed soon.”
“Once repair work is completed, the bridge will be safe for traffic. After the monsoon, a proposal for a new bridge will be submitted to the government,” Velingkar added.
On Monday, Nagargao Sarpanch Prashant Marathe inspected the repair work and expressed happiness with PWD’s quick response to start repair work.
“This bridge is vital to people in six villages and we are pleased that the bridge is being repaired on priority. We eventually hope to get a get bridge in the near future,” Marathe added.
