The gram sabha of the village panchayat of Rachol on Sunday demanded the closure of the Sonsodo waste dump yard.
At the meeting held on Sunday which was chaired by Sarpanch Emi Oliveira, members adopted the resolution for the closure of the Sonsodo waste dump on grounds the recent fire incident only brought to the fore that all is not well at the site.
Sarpanch Oliveira said though the Sonsodo waste dump is not on the border of Rachol village, villagers have to often bear the brunt of the nuisance, including fire and smoke emanating at Sonsodo.
Meanwhile, the gram sabha also deliberated at length on the issue of the football ground in the village.
Gram sabha members suggested two sites located in the village which they said could be explored to build the football ground.
The sarpanch informed that the panchayat would study the proposals before taking further decision on the ground issue. “As of now, we have no knowledge of details such as the ownership. We will study the issue before taking a call,” she added.
The gram sabha also discussed the issue of tenants staying in the village. Members demanded that the police verify the antecedents of all migrants staying in the village. They further demanded that the landlords should be made to pay one-month rent to the panchayat body.
Sarpanch Oliveira informed that the panchayat would also inspect the tenanted premises to find out whether the landlords have complied with the provisions of sanitation and hygiene at the rented rooms.
“After the police conduct the tenant verification exercise, the panchayat would inspect the premises to find out whether they enjoy basic amenities, including sanitation,” she said, adding that the panchayat would
take a decision on collecting one month’s rent from the landlords.
