A clerk on duty was attacked by an unknown person at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) railway cabin outside the Baina church on Sunday night.

According to Vasco Railway Station Manger P C Chacko, the incident occurred at around 11.30 pm on Sunday.

“The miscreant entered the cabin all of a sudden and hit our clerk on duty, Ramraj Kumar, twice with a stone on the back of his head. The incident happened in the dark and so fast that before Kumar could realise what was happening, the miscreant had vanished under the cover of darkness.”

“The employee was moved to Chicalim hospital in a 108 ambulance and later referred to GMC hospital at Bambolim for a detailed checkup and treatment.”

“The reason for the attack is unclear, but there have been instances of stones being thrown at staff going with trains to the port yard,” said Chacko.

When contacted, N J Moses, who works at the same office, claimed that stones were frequently hurled at

the staff.

“We have requested MPT on several occasions to have a focus light here, but there is only a tubelight. In the dark, we cannot see who is coming and from where. The CCTV installed here is also connected to the MPT and apparently, they can see who comes and goes in the area, but what happens inside the cabin is not visible,” said Moses.

Another employee, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “We don’t have any protection here and something must be done so that such events don’t happen again. This is to ensure safety of employees.”

Chacko also registered a complaint with the

Mormugao Police station and further investigation is in

progress.
