People's power reigned supreme at Chandor on Sunday night as thousands of protesters forced the railways to backtrack on the plan to lay a double track at the level crossing at midnight.
While the railway officials and workers did not turn up to execute the work to lay the double track, thousands of protesters laid a siege on the railway track at the level crossing since midnight.
A sea of protesters, including men, women and children occupied the railway tracks on both sides of the crossing.
Co-convenor of Goyant Kollso Naka Abhijit Prabhudesai gave a call to the thousands of protestors to occupy the tracks till the wee hours of Monday.
He pointed out that people no longer trusts the government, saying the railways may return at the spot once they leave the place.
While thousands of people invaded the tracks, thousands others had inundated both sides of the railway crossing.
Request made by the organizers to come and occupy the tracks was greeted with thunderous shouts from the protesters.
The people vowed not to allow the government to succeed in the plan to get double tracking project and coal transportation in the State.
